Reinhold Baer (1902–1979) was one of the founders of the Illinois Journal of Mathematics and a leading figure in twentieth century mathematics, whose work in group theory, geometry, topology, and other areas, foreshadowed many later developments and whose influence continues to be felt today.

This volume contains 39 invited papers written by leading experts in group theory and allied areas to mark the hundredth anniversary of Baer’s birth. The articles paint a vivid picture of the broad spectrum of mathematical research to which Baer and his academic descendents have contributed, and will be of interest to researchers and advanced students alike.

This volume has also been published, under a different cover, as Issue 1/2, Volume 47 (Spring/Summer 2003) of the Illinois Journal of Mathematics. To reach a wider audience, it is being made available for purchase at nominal cost as a standalone volume.
